20/01/12    'ASK THE REF’ - WITH TONY SPREADBURY

ON THURSDAY 26th JANUARY 2012, ‘ASK THE REFEREE’ IS YOUR CHANCE TO DO JUST THAT !

At the invitation of Bath Rugby Supporters' Club, Bath’s own International Referee, Tony Spreadbury, has agreed to talk to us about refereeing at the highest level and to tackle those questions that you normally just yell from the stands or terraces. If you're puzzled by some topical refereeing issues - like constant re-sets and penalties at the scrum, or decisions at the recent RWC - then this is your opportunity to discuss them with one of the RFU's finest !

The more athletic ones amongst you should come prepared to volunteer to ‘act’ as players to demonstrate Spreaders’ points about the laws relating to rucks and scrums etc., and all should enjoy what will definitely be a most informative and lively evening's entertainment.

The Rec Clubhouse Bar opens at 7pm for a 7.30pm start, so we hope to see you there.

Admission: Free for BRSC Members; Non-Members £3.

25/10/11    VITAMAN & BATH RUGBY TACKLE MEN'S HEALTH ISSUES IN 'MOVEMBER'

We have been approached by VitaMan to publicise their 'Movember' campaign for better men's health, and are happy to support this very worthy cause.

"VitaMan, the natural and high performance men’s grooming range is delighted to announce a new partnership agreement with Bath Rugby for the 2011/2012 season. VitaMan will supply personal products to all players and coaching staff throughout the season; provide professional products for the new 'state of the art' training ground at Farleigh House and provide products for home matches held at the historic Recreation Ground.

With VitaMan’s UK office based on the outskirts of Bath, it is also a great opportunity to connect with the local community and educate the club's supporters. Initiatives will include regular educational features in match day programmes and an awareness campaign during ‘Movember’ (the month formerly known as November) where men and women across the globe join together to raise awareness and funds for men’s health issues - specifically prostate and testicular cancer.

'Movember' is a moustache growing charity event held during November that raises funds and awareness for men's health. Men sporting 'Movember Mo’s' in effect become walking-talking billboards for the 30 days of November raising funds and much needed awareness around the often-ignored issues of men’s health. Since its humble beginnings in Melbourne Australia in 2003, Movember has grown to become a truly global movement inspiring more than 1.1 million people to participate. In 2010, over 111,825 'Mo Bros and Mo Sistas' got on board in the UK, raising £11.7 million. VitaMan has created a mo-growing team for the 2011 event and the aptly named VitaMo team is captained by Bath Rugby's David Flatman.

On Movember 1st, 'Mo Bros' start the month clean shaven, then grow and groom their moustaches all month long. Everyone who purchases VitaMan shave products throughout this period or joins the VitaMo Movember team will automatically be entered in a free prize draw to win a signed Bath Rugby shirt and rugby ball. As the Official Grooming Supplier for Bath Rugby, VitaMan is organizing events at the Harlequins home game on 5th November and the activity culminates in a team 'shave- off' on 3rd December. By joining the VitaMo team, there is a competition for 'Man of Movember' and several other 'Mo' awards categories, and you also stand a chance to win a place at the VitaMo Awards Party.

Did you know…?

• 1 in 9 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in the UK – one man is diagnosed every 15 minutes.

• A man will die from prostate cancer every hour - more than 10,000 men will die of the disease this year in the UK.

• Occurrences of prostate cancer in men are comparable to the rates of breast cancer in women.

• Testicular cancer in the UK affects men between the ages of 20 and 50. There were 1,990 men diagnosed with the disease in 2007.

For more information on how to register for Movember and how VitaMan is helping to support Movember, visit www.vitamangrooming.co.uk/movember.html

18/10/11    RUGBY WORLD CUP FORUM - PUNDITS' PREDICTIONS

An expert panel of Bath Rugby coaches and players, joined by CEO Nick Blofeld, took part in a BRSC World Cup Forum in-between the group and knock-out stages of the 2011 tournament in New Zealand.

Martin Haag and Brad Davis led a multi-national team consisting of Simon Taylor, Michael Claassens, Matt Carraro, and Ross Batty. After a review of the Pool stage results and questions from the audience, each picked his semi-finalists and finalists, before nominating their likely winners.

Only Brad and Matt chose all four successful semi-finalists, and then Brad alone correctly predicted a France v All Blacks final. However, Simon’s prediction of a home triumph means he is still in the game, whilst Brad’s tip for a Gallic victory leaves him on course for a clean sweep of ‘Mystic Meg’ proportions.

Many thanks to all of the panellists for being such good sports. (See link for Photo of the Forum Members.)             ../Photos/Pictures/2011WCForumMembers.jpg

12/09/11          PASSION CHALLENGE - BATH V GLOUCESTER !!

This could be your chance to prove that Bath's fans are at least as, if not more, passionate about our team than the most hardcore regular inhabitants of the infamous Shed are about the Cherry & Whites.

This season, Premiership sponsors Aviva are partnering Bath University in a study to scientifically establish which Premiership club has the most devoted and passionate supporters. The research team will visit six matches during the season - starting with Glaws v Bath on Saturday 24 September at Kingsholm - to collect psychological and physiological data from a section of fans of each team. During the games they will measure heart rates, as well as noise, anxiety and testosterone levels. The results will then be released on facebook.com/premiershiprugby and the relevant club's website a few days after each match.

So, if you fancy being a 'guinea pig' Bath supporter at the local derby up at Castle Grim, all you need do to apply is send an e-mail to "avivapremiershipfans@gmail.com" with 'Bath fans' in the title. Remember to give your name, age, address, and a sentence or two explaining why you think you are Bath's most passionate supporter.

Aviva are giving the chosen fans a FREE TICKET to the match, so that should set the pulses racing !

22/08/11    2ND REMINDER - 6X RAFFLE PRIZE WINNERS AT AWARDS SUPPER

At the Awards Supper last Wednesday two prizes of a case of 6X (24 cans) were won, but have not so far been claimed. Even though our esteemed MC unfortunately forgot to direct the winners over to me on table 10, they were advised to contact me with their names, addresses and contact phone numbers so that I could arrange for Wadworth to deliver their prizes directly to them at home or work.

Please contact Glyn Edwards on 01749 831204 or at "wwelliscup@yahoo.com".

19/08/11    ANNUAL AWARDS SUPPER

Last Wednesday the Supporters’ Club held our Annual Awards Supper in the Rec Clubhouse, kindly sponsored this year by Roman Candles of Bath and Silcox, Son & Wicks, the furnishers of Kingsmead Square. Almost a full XV of players joined the members, along with a table of Bath Rugby’s own staff, as 140 diners enjoyed an excellent meal expertly prepared and served by the team managed by Kirstie Marrs.

The evening was ‘hosted’ on behalf of the BRSC Committee by none other than one of Bath’s favourite sons, former England International and British Lion, Matt Perry. Matt did a superb job in interviewing the various award winners, and orchestrated the whole evening with invaluable support from the BRSC organiser – Emma Sparks. Thanks are also due to Andy and Cathy Thatcher, who gave a lot of their time on the day to ensure that the Clubhouse looked at its best. Last, but not least, we should acknowledge the contribution of Becky Pocock for her ideas and planning skills, and the role of Dean Quintin in managing the operation on the night.

The players’ awards winners for 2010-11 were as follows:

Try of the Season – won by Tom Biggs (one of his hat-trick against Wasps at Twickenham in April), and presented by long-standing supporter, Betty Measday.

Personality of the Season – won by the legendary Danny Grewcock in his last season, and presented by ‘Allez-Bath’ webmaster, Kelvin Brunton.

Unsung Hero of the Season – won by Matt Carraro, and presented by BRSC Treasurer, Erica Edwards.

Young Player of the Season – won by Guy Mercer, and presented by Community Foundation Shirt Raffle stalwart, Hughie Armitage.

Vince Dyer Memorial Trophy for Player of the Season – won by Michael Claassens, and presented by Doreen Dyer.

Other players joining in the celebrations were Nick Abendanon, Olly Barkley, Ross Batty, Nathan Catt, Pieter Dixon, Mark Lilley, Ben Skirving, and birthday boy Simon Taylor. Led by the ‘wouldn’t take no for an answer’ Mark Lilley, and the rather more charming Michael Claassens, they all did a splendid job encouraging people to buy tickets for the raffle, which raised £350 for Dorothy House Hospice.

The last piece of ‘business’ for the evening was the presentation by Robin Phillips of the Mowbray Woodward Award for Services to Bath Rugby to the well-deserved winner for 2010-11 - Dave White.

Dave has been a member of the Supporter’s Club since its inception, and also served a term as Chairman. He is a regular traveller to away matches and you are just as likely to bump into him in Biarritz and Belfast as you are in Leicester or Leeds. However, it is as a matchday collector for the Community Foundation that put him squarely into the frame for this award. Over many years, and in all kinds of weather, he has sold Shirt Raffle Tickets week-in and week-out with great success until he decided to hang up his book and pen at the end of last season. Congratulations, Dave !

18/08/11    FOUR PLAYERS TAKEN HOSTAGE AT AWARDS SUPPER

Whilst a really good time was had by all at last night's Awards Supper (full report to follow) several 'players' were apparently 'kidnapped' at the end of the evening - and Dean would like them back, please.

The table markers in the shape of playing kit were specially made to order and cost over £25 each. One or two over-enthusiastic diners seem to have - inadvertently, no doubt - given a new home to the markers from tables 5, 7, 10 and 14.

Their safe return would be much appreciated - otherwise the Supporters' Club will have to stump up the money to allow Bath Rugby to sign some replacements for the new season, and our salary cap is all accounted for at this time !

There will be no ransom paid, so if you hold one of the hostages please either hand the item in to Dean Quintin at the Clubhouse or to a BRSC Committee member at the Supporters' Club desk at the next match.

18/08/11    AWARDS SUPPER - WADWORTH'S RAFFLE PRIZE WINNERS

At the Awards Supper last night, two people each won a raffle prize of a case of 6X ale, kindly donated by Wadworth of Devizes.

The brewery will deliver the case of beer directly to each winner's home or workplace, as preferred, so can I ask them both to let me know their name, address, and contact telephone number so that the brewery can arrange delivery.

The Awards Supper, sponsored by 'Roman Candles of Bath' and Silcox Son & Wicks (Furnishers) will be held in the Clubhouse on Wednesday 17th August 2011; 7pm for drinks in the "Insider Lounge" (Premier Bar) whilst mingling with the Players, before sitting down to eat at 7.30pm. Dress code is 'smart casual'.

In a change from the past this year we will have a guest Master of Ceremonies in the form of one of our favourite sons, Matt Perry, so this should be a night to remember.

If you want to join us for what will be a full house event then just download a form - including the menu choices - from the attached link and send to Emma Sparks with your remittance.

Remember ticketing is on a 'first come, first served' basis and, as at 27th July, we only had 50 remaining tickets available out of our total capacity of 140. See you there !!

If you know someone without 'online' access who you think might like to attend, please pass on this information and we will send them a booking form if requested by phone.

02/08/11    SPORTS FAN RESEARCH - UNIVERSITY OF GLAMORGAN

Hi - my name is Dan Bowers. I am a psychologist and researcher at the University of Glamorgan. We are currently conducting some research looking at rugby and other sports fans. We are particularly interested in how important being a supporter is to people and the addictive nature of being a supporter.

We have devised a survey looking at these ideas (amongst others!) and I am very much hoping that Bath Rugby supporters will be able to help us out. We have already done this very successfully with rugby clubs in the Welsh Premiership and the Cardiff Devils ice hockey club.

The survey we have created is brand new and as such we are looking to get thousands of responses to validate it. It only takes 5-10 minutes to complete and will hopefully be very interesting for the people who fill it in! I've copied the link in below for you to have a look at.

https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/7GLB5YY

I am confident that this study and its results are going to be extremely interesting both to us and to sports fans in general and I would be more than happy to write regular updates to let you all know what we are finding out.

Cheers

Dan     https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/7GLB5YY
