Freetime Machos

Director: Mika Ronkainen

Germany, Finland | 2009 | 86m | 15tbc

Little Theatre, 6.30pm

With: Matti Kerånen, Mikko Koljonen, Jarmo Stoor, Roger Holden, Ana Rodriguez Vidal

A comedy about the world’s most northern (and third lousiest) rugby team from Northern Finland. Freetime Machos follows the friendship between Mikko and Matti. Overworked and domesticated, rugby allows them the space to revel in their masculinity and bond with their teammates. But  everyday life is encroaching. Mikko’s wife goes back to work and he has to do the childcare while Matti’s girlfriend is pressing him for more commitment. And despite their bravado they are failing miserably on the pitch. English coach Roger despairs at their sub-par athleticism – if they fail again they will be relegated. Set against the melancholic backdrop of their hometown Oulu with a surprisingly poetic narration (written by one of the teammates) this is warm and genuinely funny story of male friendship.

We are delighted to welcome director Mika Ronkainen from Finland who will take part in a Q&A session after the screening led by former England and Bath Rugby Captain, Phil de Glanville. (tbc)
